We are deeply honored and extremely pleased to announce that our keynote speaker will be Dr. Robert Gauldin, of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, who will speak on "The Tyranny of Analytic Systems." Sessions will take place in the recently-built Sweeney Lecture Hall in the Simon Music Building; this is a facility with state-of-the-art presentation equipment including sound (MIDI synthesizer, CD, and cassette), video (laser disk, VHS player, and cable TV), computing (Windows NT 4.0 and PowerMac System 7.5), and three full-projection screens, all controllable from a dedicated computer control panel. For those presenters less interested in pretending they are at the helm of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise, more traditional presentation media (blackboard, overhead projector, and grand piano) are also available. The program committee invites proposals for papers on all subjects pertaining to music theory. Proposals should be at least three but not more than five pages of double-spaced text; diagrams and musical examples are not included in these limits. Please prepare five copies of each proposal; each of the five copies should include the title and duration (as read aloud) of the paper, but not the author's name. Include a cover letter including the title of the paper and the name, address, e-mail address, and phone number of the author. Papers will be placed in forty minute time slots, with thirty minutes allowed for presentation and ten minutes for questions and discussion. All proposals must be received no later than December 1, 1997. Student submissions are warmly encouraged. The program committee invites all graduate students to submit proposals for papers related to music theory, analysis, ethnomusicology, history, or any other topic concerning the study and practice of music. We ask that proposals are typed, double-spaced, and fall within a 3-5 page limit from which diagrams and musical examples are, of course, excluded. Proposed presentations will have to fit in a thirty minute time slot allotted for each paper. Therefore, papers should be between twenty and twenty-five minutes in length, allowing time for a brief introduction and follow-up questions. If you are interested in participating in our second annual GSMF Symposium, please send four copies of your proposal, omitting the author's name as well as any other identifying marks, along with a cover letter providing the author's name, mailing address, telephone number(s), e-mail address(es), institutional affiliation, and title of the proposed paper to: Scott J.
