Proposal Instructions / Guidelines:

The CUNY Graduate Center's Music Ph.D.-D.M.A. program invites paper submissions for its ninth annual Graduate Students in Music (GSIM) symposium, Musical Spaces, to be held on Saturday, April 1st, 2006 in the CUNY Graduate Center's Segal Theatre.

Scholars across all disciplines of music-ethnomusicology, theory, performance, musicology, and composition-have engaged the idea of musical space in different ways. Explorations of music and space might include:

--spatial/structural relationships in or on music
--exterior spaces where music performances occur and where music is mediated
--interior spaces where music is conceived and perceived
--the space of the body that performs music
--national and transnational musical spaces
--gendered and/or racialized spaces
--urban musical spaces
--music in public space

Graduate students are invited to submit proposals for 20-minute presentations that interrogate relationships between music and space. Submissions should contain a 300-500 word proposal with title, indication of audio-visual needs, and the author's contact information, including institutional affiliation.
